Sione and Abbey weren’t strangers to setting big goals. After saving a deposit in their early twenties, they decided to take time off to travel the world. By the time they returned, buying a home felt like a distant dream—especially during 2021 when house prices were skyrocketing.
“We didn’t think we were anywhere close,” Sione recalls. “But a conversation with my KiwiSaver manager changed everything. He said, ‘You’re closer than you think.’ That’s when we realised we could take the leap.”
Encouraged, they attended a first-home buyer seminar and explored their options. Initially, they purchased a home off the plans but had to back out due to unforeseen contractual issues. Discouraged, they paused their search and focused on other priorities, including an overseas adventure.
When they returned, they decided to explore existing homes. It was during this time that they stumbled across a Faisandier townhouse. The low-maintenance lifestyle and modern design won them over.
“When we walked into the townhouse, it just clicked,” Abbey says. “It felt warm, welcoming, and most importantly, it was ready to live in. We could spend our weekends playing tennis or sewing, instead of renovating.”
The townhouse was more affordable than a standalone house, but didn’t compromise on what mattered most––warm, comfortable and a good location.
For Sione and Abbey, the second time around felt easier. With a great mortgage broker and lawyer by their side, they found the process seamless. “We wish we had spoken to a broker sooner,” Abbey reflects. “Even if you’re not ready to buy, they can help you make a plan and show you what’s possible.”
Their advice?
Don’t overthink it—just start. “Talk to a broker, attend a seminar, or even just visit an open home. Sometimes the first step is all it takes to shift your mindset.”
