Introducing 11 Collingwood Street

Seven new homes on one of Lower Hutt's most charming streets. We launched Collingwood Street a few months ago and I'm really proud of how it's coming together.

Waterloo is a great spot – leafy, quiet, walkable – and Collingwood Street itself is particularly special, lined with mature Pohutukawa and a short stroll from the train station, parks and schools.

Hear from our architects

We asked Jesse at Voxell Architects to walk us through the thinking behind the design:

The front three houses are classic terraced homes entered off Collingwood St, with a deep grassy lawn in front of them. We worked hard to give them a tall and elegant appearance, featuring small sheltered front porches and a combination of cedar weatherboards and profiled metal cladding. The living spaces flow through to west-facing decks, with a choice of two or three bedrooms.

The second group of four houses include garages, accessed off an attractively landscaped driveway on the southern side of the site. These houses are a lot wider than a standard townhome, which allows the living areas to open out and wrap around sunny private courtyards on the northern side. These courtyards are designed for Wellington's climate as sun-traps — sheltered from the southerly winds, getting all day sun from the north, and opening on two sides directly into the living and dining rooms. They form small but very functional outdoor spaces at the heart of the house, bringing light and sun deep into the homes. They are also exceptionally private, enclosed on three sides, with visibility carefully controlled from neighbouring buildings.

A lot of care has gone into the design of both the site plan and the architecture to create a living environment that is both beautiful and practical, and we hope they are enjoyed for generations to come.
